{"id":2113,"date":"2023-12-17T15:24:36","date_gmt":"2023-12-17T15:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ceylondailynews.lk\/home\/?p=2113"},"modified":"2023-12-17T15:24:38","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T15:24:38","slug":"more-than-60-dead-after-migrant-boat-headed-for-europe-capsizes-in-the-mediterranean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ceylondailynews.lk\/home\/2023\/12\/17\/more-than-60-dead-after-migrant-boat-headed-for-europe-capsizes-in-the-mediterranean\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 60 dead after migrant boat headed for Europe capsizes in the Mediterranean"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 60 people have died after a boat carrying migrants towards Europe capsized in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boat, which has 86&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/hot-topics\/migrant-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">migrants&nbsp;<\/a>on board, got into serious trouble off the Libyan coast on Saturday evening when strong waves overwhelmed it near the western town of Zuwara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women and children were among the 61 migrants who died, the UN\u2019s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe central Mediterranean continues to be one of the world\u2019s most dangerous migration routes,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flavio di Giacomo, a spokesperson for the IOM, said: \u201cOver 2250 people have lost their lives in the Central Med this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA dramatic number which unfortunately demonstrates that not enough is being done to save lives at sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Libya is the most popular departure point into the Mediterranean for people looking to migrate from Africa and the Middle East into Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many are fleeing wars, while others are seeking a better life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country is politically unstable, which has benefited human traffickers, who smuggle in migrants across the country\u2019s borders with six countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are then crammed into boats that are often unseaworthy, including rubber dinghies, and launched into the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are caught and taken back to Libya are held in government-run detention centres rife with abuses, including forced labour, beatings, rapes and torture which amount to crimes against humanity, according to UN-commissioned investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/news\/rishi-sunak-warns-migrant-threat-overwhelming-uk-italy-fund-tunisia-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rishi Sunak visited Italy<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss the problem of irregular&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/hot-topics\/immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">migration<\/a>&nbsp;into the UK..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prime Minister made a speech in which he said that \u201cenemies\u201d want to use migration as a \u201cweapon\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cIf we do not tackle this problem, the numbers will only grow. It will overwhelm our countries and our capacity to help those who actually need our help the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf that requires us to update our laws and lead an international conversation to amend the post-war frameworks around asylum, then we must do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause if we don\u2019t fix this problem now, the boats will keep coming and more lives will be lost at sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 60 people have died after a boat carrying migrants towards Europe capsized in the Mediterranean.
