Former President and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa was once again elected as the leader of the party. The former President was re-elected to the leadership at the second convention of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday evening. MP Gamini Lokuge proposed his name while MP Johnston Fernando seconded it. Party members present at the Convention approved this by raising their hands.
The Convention which turned another chapter of the political history of the country, commenced with the arrival of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
All political parties and independent groups which have tied up with the SLPP were invited for the convention. The SLPP’s future course of action and the work programme aiming at taking the country forward were unveiled at the convention.
The Party which began in 2016 has made many strides forward while facing many challenges. The strength of the party was vividly manifested at the first local government election which was won with overwhelming majority. Thereafter the party succeeded in winning Presidential and Parliament elections.
Chief Incumbent of North Western Province Ven.Rekawa Jinarathana Thera, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunwardena, Founder of the party and former Economic Development Miniter Basil Rajapaksa, Ministers Keheliya Rambukwella, Prasanna Ranatunga, Dr.Ramesh Pathirana, Kanchana Wijesekera, Tiran Alles, Douglous Devananda, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Ali Sabry PC, State Ministers Kanaka Herath, Thenuka Vidanagamage, Arundika Fernando, Piyal Nishantha and Wimalaweera Dissanayake were among those present.
