Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that the upcountry plantation labour community should be given lands of their own for both cultivation and for housing, considering their longstanding service to the country.
Premadasa praised the invaluable service rendered by this community who are working tirelessly in the tea plantations.
The Opposition Leader made these remarks at an event to mark the 200th anniversary of the arrival of plantation workers to Sri Lanka, organized by the Nuwara Eliya labour workers association at the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council.
He said although previous Governments promised these plantation workers ownership of lands it did not become a reality due to various reasons.
“But, I promise that an SJB Government in the future, we will grant these workers the ownership of lands considering their valuable service done towards uplifting the country’s economy,” he said.
