The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a significant salary increase for state sector employees, set to take effect from January 2025. These reforms will see government employees receive salary hikes ranging from 24% to 50%.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the approval follows recommendations from the Presidential Expert Committee, led by Udaya R. Seneviratne, which was tasked with addressing salary discrepancies within the government sector.

Starting January 1, 2025, the basic salary for public service employees will see a minimum increase of 24% for the lowest ranks, with all public service professionals receiving raises ranging from 24% to over 50%.

In addition, the committee, appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, recommended doubling the annual salary increments for government employees.

These salary adjustments will also apply to employees of public corporations, boards and statutory bodies, universities, and the armed forces, starting next year, according to the PMD.
