A group of prominent Sri Lankan artists has publicly declared their support for President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming election, recognizing his leadership during the country’s recent crisis. Veteran actor Roger Seneviratne emphasized that President Wickremesinghe, once overlooked in the nation’s political landscape, returned to prominence during a time of national turmoil, steering Sri Lanka away from potential disaster and restoring governance.

Speaking at a press conference on September 11, held at President Wickremesinghe’s political office on Flower Road in Colombo, Seneviratne acknowledged that although the economic crisis is not entirely resolved, the people face a critical decision on September 21—whether to allow the country to regress or continue on the path to recovery.

Several artists spoke at the event, crediting President Wickremesinghe with reviving the arts sector, which had been severely impacted by the ongoing national crises. They praised his leadership and policies, noting that the sector began to recover following the 2022 economic crisis, thanks to initiatives introduced by the President.

Veteran singer Rajeev Sebastian highlighted Wickremesinghe’s long-standing support for the arts, recalling his role in founding the National Youth Services Council, which nurtured many of Sri Lanka’s leading artists. “President Wickremesinghe’s vision has allowed artists to secure a brighter future,” Sebastian remarked, adding that while the President may not seek personal gain from the country, the country undoubtedly needs his continued leadership.
