Former MP Dayasiri Jayasekera has called on the new government to auction the returned state vehicles and channel the proceeds into the Treasury, rather than using the vehicles as public exhibits.
The SLFP member made the comments in response to media inquiries regarding the dozens of returned state vehicles currently parked near the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.
“I believe they find some satisfaction in displaying the vehicles,” Jayasekera remarked. “In 2015, John Amaratunga staged a similar vehicle display at Galle Face Green. These vehicles were not used by ministers or MPs, but by staff at the President’s Office and other government officials.”
Jayasekera urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to auction off the vehicles and deposit the funds into the Treasury. He also suggested that government officials should be instructed to use three-wheelers for their official duties, as a cost-saving measure.
