A chicken kilo notches Rs.1,750
Vegetable traders in the Hatton area point out that the vegetable trade has declined rapidly due to the fact that the wholesale price of upcountry and low country vegetables have risen to around Rs.400-750 per kg.
Traders say that a kilo of sweet potato is being sold at Rs.600, a kilo of snake gourd and okra for Rs.450 to 500, cabbage Rs.500, carrots Rs.500, beans Rs.600 and green chillies are sold at the maximum retail price of Rs.750.
Retailers say that the price of vegetables has gone up due to the lack of supply of vegetables in the market to meet the demand.
Meanwhile, the price of chicken has gone upto about Rs.1,750 per kilo, and due to the increase in prices, the sale of chicken meat has decreased rapidly.
