A suspect was arrested by the Kandy Police for torching a student who obtained 9 A’s in the 2021 G.C.E Ordinary Level exams on Tuesday (29th).
The student has been admitted to hospital with serious burn injuries, after being torched by a drug addict, Police said.
The victim was identified as a 17-year-old boy and a resident of Meekanuwa, Ampitiya.
According to preliminary investigations, it was revealed that the student had been confronted by a stranger on Saturday night (26th) while returning home with his family members.
The stranger, who had borne a torch in his hand, along with a bottle of kerosene, had confronted the boy in agitation and had thrown kerosene and the torch in the victim’s direction.
The 17-year-old suffered serious burn injuries to his arms and neck, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.
Investigations led by Kandy Police revealed that the suspect is a drug addict with a criminal record.
