National People’s Power Leader (NPP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament that when the Election Commission has been empowered to conduct elections, it is not ethical to investigate the Commission through a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC).
The MP said that the proposal of the Parliamentary Selection Committee is a violation of the privileges of the Election Commission and said the history of elections in this country has a very dark and ugly history. MP Dissanayake said that the Election Commission was established to make these elections independent to a certain extent and that all necessary regulatory measures have been assigned to the Election Commission as a power regarding the conduct of elections in the country.
He said that there is an attempt to run away from the Presidential election by holding a referendum and the effort to call the Election Commission to Parliament should be stopped.
